Sand mining in Indonesia causing severe river degradation and infrastructure damage.
Sand mining in Sombe-Lewara River has damaged sediment control structures and caused river degradation. To prevent further damage, a sediment management plan is needed. A study analyzed sediment flow from 2000 to 2009 and found that approximately 240,195 m3 of sediment enters Sombe River annually, with 105,890 m3 passing through control point 1. Sand mining has significantly impacted the river and existing structures.
