New study reveals alarming carbon loss in Indonesian forests, impacting global emissions
The study focused on setting carbon emission reference levels for implementing REDD in Kampar, Indonesia using satellite imagery and raster calculations. REDD aims to prevent deforestation by issuing carbon credits for forest conservation. The researchers classified land use and cover using Landsat images, applied three land use scenarios, and found that carbon loss from forest degradation exceeded loss from forest conversion. The methodology developed in this study, based on internationally recognized REDD guidelines, is expected to be useful for actual REDD implementation.
