Committee chairs in parliamentary systems can influence how government policies are reviewed. By studying 1,100 government bills in three democracies, it was found that opposition parties have more power to scrutinize policies when they control committee chairs. Government parties can also keep their coalition allies in check, regardless of who controls the committee chairs.
