STEM knowledge key to high school engineering success, study finds.
High school students who understand STEM concepts do better in engineering design projects. A study looked at how students used their knowledge in a mechanical toy design project. The research found that students who knew STEM concepts well were more successful in engineering design, especially in analyzing and evaluating. To improve engineering instruction, teachers should help students apply STEM knowledge and process skills, enhance science and math understanding, and improve spatial and sketching abilities for better design work.
