Volcanic activity driving glacier advances in Alaska, study finds.
Glacier terminus movements in Alaska's Wrangell and Chugach Mountains were studied. Glaciers on Mount Wrangell mostly stayed the same or slightly retreated, but Ahtna, Center, and South MacKeith Glaciers advanced due to volcanic meltwater changing their conditions. In College Fjord, Harvard Glacier advanced while Yale Glacier retreated, showing that dynamic controls, not just climate changes, affect glacier terminus behavior.
