Logging and farming practices contribute to massive sediment pollution in rivers.
The study looked at how sediment moves in the North Esk River in Tasmania. They found that logging and farming activities are the main sources of sediment. A special device was made to measure sediment levels in the river, and this helped estimate how much sediment is carried by the river each year. The researchers calculated that around 7225 tons of sediment are transported by the North Esk River annually, and this adds up to about 56,900 tons for the whole Tamar River area.
