Lake St Pierre contributes to river pollution, impacting water quality downstream.
The researchers studied sediment movement in Lake St Pierre and the St Lawrence River in Canada. They found that during low flow periods, sediment flows out of the lake into the river. However, heavy rainstorms can reverse this flow temporarily. Sediment from the tributaries is a constant concern for water quality, especially during spring melt when loads are high. In summer, sediment from the tributaries can be stirred up in the lake and carried downstream by the river.
