Revolutionizing Organic Farming: No-Till Corn and Soybean Production Breakthrough!
Cover crop-based, organic rotational no-till corn and soybean production is a promising method to reduce tillage in organic farming in the mid-Atlantic US. By using a roller-crimper to terminate cover crops and planting corn and soybean directly into the mulch, consistent soybean yields have been achieved. However, challenges remain in managing fertility for corn production. Grass-legume mixtures can improve nitrogen release and weed suppression, while inter-row cultivation helps with weed control. Strategies are needed to address volunteer cover crops in later rotations and improve machinery for planting into thick mulch. Breeding efforts are also necessary to develop better cover crop varieties for the region.
