Group identity is influenced by whether people see the group as having extreme or typical members. Believing that the group focuses on ideal members leads to more social undermining behavior. This behavior is linked to perceptions of status differences within the group. When group goals are emphasized, the negative effects of ideal group prototypes on social undermining are reduced.
