The study looked at how changes in age-specific marital fertility rates relate to the actual fertility of couples. In Japan, even though the age-specific marital fertility rate went up from 1975 to 1980, the fertility of individual couples actually decreased during the same time. The researchers used official Japanese data to show the connections between different fertility rates.
