Urban planning crucial to combat climate change in energy-intensive cities
Urban planning plays a crucial role in reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in cities. Despite covering only 2% of the land, cities produce 80% of emissions and use 80% of resources. Designers are already creating energy-efficient buildings, but now cities need to follow suit with sustainable urban policies. The COP21 agreement in Paris highlights the global commitment to combat climate change. The challenge now is to translate these commitments into practical actions at all levels of planning. In the Mediterranean region, cities face specific challenges due to climate change, with Southern Europe and MENA countries experiencing more heatwaves. Integrating green infrastructure into urban planning is essential for creating sustainable human settlements.
