Vermicompost boosts tomato growth, market compost hinders - study finds
The study looked at how different types of compost (market, home, and vermicompost) and their application rates affect the growth of potted tomatoes. They found that vermicompost had the highest organic matter and nitrogen content, while market compost had the highest phosphorus and potassium content. Growth of tomato plants increased with higher rates of home compost and vermicompost, but decreased with higher rates of market compost. Shoot nutrient content varied between compost types, with nitrogen and potassium concentration higher with market compost, phosphorus concentration higher with vermicompost, and sulphur concentration highest with home compost. High rates of market compost led to growth reduction due to high pH and salt content.
