China's Land Use Planning Slows Construction Land Growth, But Challenges Remain.
Land use planning in China from 2006 to 2020 has helped control the growth of construction land. A study of 288 cities found that the implementation of land use planning reduced the expansion of construction land by 107,449 hectares. The effectiveness of the planning varied among cities, with megacities and large cities showing weaker effects compared to medium-small cities. The impact of land use planning was more significant from 2007 to 2009 than from 2010 to 2012. While the planning slowed down the rapid growth of construction land, it did not fully prevent it. Suggestions for improvement include enhancing the quota system, defining urban development boundaries, and integrating special plans.
