Black American Press Challenges 'White Australia' Policies, Supports Indigenous Australians
African American newspapers talked about Indigenous Australians and Australia's racial laws from 1919 to 1948. They criticized the "White Australia" policy and saw similarities between Indigenous Australians' treatment and American slavery. During World War II, they praised how black American troops were treated in Australia. After the war, they went back to criticizing "White Australia" and supporting Aboriginal Australians' rights. The black American press believed in a global alliance against colonization, including Indigenous Australians.
