Sustainable Fishing Practices Boost Ecosystem Health and Food Security in South Africa
Ecosystem models are being used to help manage fisheries in South Africa, specifically in the southern Benguela region. These models are helping to balance fishing activities with conservation efforts. A workshop in 2002 recommended implementing an ecosystem approach to fisheries management in South Africa. By incorporating ecosystem models into current management strategies, the implications of these strategies can be tested. The focus is on small pelagic fisheries, and these models are aiding in the implementation of an ecosystem approach in the southern Benguela. Future management and conservation issues in South African fisheries are being addressed using these models.
