Maldivian pole-and-line tuna fishery drastically reduces bycatch rates
The Maldivian pole-and-line tuna fishery has low bycatch rates, with only 0.65% of total tuna catch being bycatch. Most of the bycatch is utilized, and dead discards are minimal at 0.02% of total tuna catch. Rainbow runner and dolphinfish make up 93% of the bycatch. Fishing on free schools results in less bycatch compared to schools associated with objects. Bycatch rates are lower in the south than in the north. The fishery catches roughly 552.6 tons of bycatch and 27.9 tons of discards annually, much less than other tuna fisheries in the Indian Ocean.
