Intercropping pigeonpea boosts grain yield in Northern Karnataka dry zone.
A study was conducted to compare different types of pigeonpea varieties in a pearl millet+pigeonpea intercropping system in Karnataka. The researchers found that the GHB-558 pearl millet hybrid with medium duration pigeonpea variety TS-3R gave the highest grain yield. However, pigeonpea grain yield decreased when intercropped with pearl millet. The short duration Gullal local pigeonpea variety had the highest grain yield when grown alone, while the long duration Asha variety had the lowest. Overall, intercropping with the GHB-558 pearl millet hybrid and TS-3R pigeonpea variety resulted in the highest pearl millet grain equivalent yield.
