Intensive grazing boosts milk production and profits for dairy farmers.
A study on grazing intensity with Holstein cows found that pasturing 5 cows per hectare with high concentrate feed led to higher milk production and profits compared to lower grazing intensities. Cows grazing at 5 cows per hectare produced more milk and had better economic returns than those at 2.5 or 7.5 cows per hectare. This suggests that intensive grazing with sufficient concentrate feed can sustainably support more cows per hectare, making it a viable option for areas with high land and pasture maintenance costs.
