Constructed wetlands key in removing water pollutants, improving aquatic ecosystems.
Constructed wetlands in Korea are used for treating wastewater and managing stormwater. The main way pollutants like nitrogen are removed is through a process called nitrification/denitrification in the wetland's roots. Phosphorus is mostly removed by sticking to the wetland's substrate. However, what happens to phosphorus can vary based on factors like the wetland's oxygen levels, how it sticks and comes off surfaces, and the effects of microbes.
