New soil loss equation revolutionizes rangeland conservation in Western U.S.
The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) has been updated to better predict soil erosion on rangelands. New factors specific to the Western United States were added, along with a subfactor method for determining soil cover and a table for slope length and steepness on rangelands. By comparing actual soil loss to predicted loss using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) at 17 sites in the Western U.S., researchers found varying levels of accuracy. The RUSLE factors were analyzed in relation to unique conditions on rangelands.
