Expert gymnasts show more irregular postural control in challenging stances.
Expert gymnasts were compared to non-gymnasts in their ability to balance with their eyes closed. The study looked at the patterns of foot pressure to see if gymnasts had better control. While both groups swayed similarly, gymnasts actually had more irregular foot pressure movements compared to non-gymnasts. This suggests that gymnasts' specialized training may not help them as much in simple balancing tasks. The study shows that analyzing the dynamic patterns of foot pressure can give us a better understanding of how gymnasts control their balance.
