Sea water leaching reduces soil salinity, boosts agricultural production in arid regions.
Sea water can help reduce salt in overly salty soil. Researchers in Oman tested sea water on sandy soil with a salt crust. They found that leaching with sea water decreased soil salinity by up to 90.4%, with the surface soil showing the most improvement. Using sea water equal to the depth of soil to be leached was most effective. However, soil leached with sea water still had more salt than soil leached with tap water.
