Microinsurance is a relatively new concept in South Africa, often seen as a financial service linked to microfinance. While microloans have been around longer, microinsurance has gained attention more recently. The Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Muhammad Yunus in 2006 for his work in microfinance helped raise awareness of these services. In South Africa, microinsurance is becoming a significant topic of discussion.
