Soil acidity affects bean production in the Tropics: Key findings revealed!
The study looked at how soil acidity affects bean production and leaf composition in tropical regions. Beans responded well to lime treatment in field experiments on six different soils. Adding lime increased calcium in bean leaves and decreased manganese, leading to higher bean production. Beans thrived at a pH of around 5.2, with low levels of exchangeable aluminum in the soil. Bean production also increased with higher levels of exchangeable bases and lower levels of exchangeable aluminum. The study suggests that pH, exchangeable bases, and exchangeable aluminum are important factors to consider when determining the need for lime treatment in tropical soils for bean production.
