New method predicts soil strength and water retention for better construction.
Researchers developed formulas to predict how sandy soils hold water and their strength properties using basic soil characteristics. They tested these formulas on different types of sandy soils and found that they were more accurate than previous methods. The formulas can also estimate how strong the soil is under certain conditions based on its particle size and uniformity. Soils with finer particles or more variation in size tend to have higher strength due to capillary forces.
