Wastewater treatment plants can drastically reduce microplastic pollution in waterways
Scientists studied ways to remove tiny pieces of plastic, called microplastics, from wastewater before it goes into rivers or oceans. They looked at four different wastewater treatment plants. The first plant removed almost all the microplastics, the second plant took out 97%, the third plant removed 95%, and the fourth plant got rid of between 40% to 98.5% of the microplastics. This means that by using these advanced treatment methods, wastewater treatment plants can significantly reduce the amount of microplastics that end up in the environment.
