Subsurface drainage system boosts soil health and crop yields significantly.
The study looked at how a subsurface drainage system affects salt-affected soils in a specific area in Karnataka, India. They found that the soil's ability to let water pass through improved slightly after harvesting. The drainage system helped increase the infiltration rate of water into the soil. The estimates of how well water moves through the soil were much higher when calculated for a larger area compared to measurements taken in the field. Overall, the drainage system was found to be economically beneficial with a good return on investment over a 50-year lifespan.
