Deadly sills from Siberian Traps linked to mass extinction trigger.
The end-Permian mass extinction was triggered by the initial pulse of Siberian Traps sills, not the flood lavas. These sills released massive amounts of greenhouse gases by heating sediments, leading to catastrophic global environmental changes. Sill complexes in large igneous provinces are more likely to cause mass extinctions than flood basalt or dike-dominated provinces.
