Acidifying manure slashes ammonia emissions from dairy barns by 87%
Manure acidification can help reduce ammonia emissions from dairy barns. By keeping the pH of the flush water below 6, researchers found a significant decrease in ammonia levels. They tested two methods: adjusting the pH of the flush water and irrigating manure alleys with acid water. Results showed a 39% reduction in ammonia emissions when the manure pH was around 5.0 during storage. Using acid-treated flush water also cut down on the amount of acid needed by 86%. This study demonstrates effective ways to lower ammonia emissions from dairy operations and save costs by using less acid.
