Researchers studied overwash on a barrier island during a hurricane in 1988. They used video techniques to measure the speed of overwash waves, finding some moving faster than 2 m/sec. The waves were fastest at the berm crest and slowed down as they moved across the washover flat. They also discussed how sediment moves during overwash events.
