Domestic coking coal reserves revived, reducing steel industry's reliance on imports.
Researchers studied ways to clean low-quality coking coal from the Jharia coalfields in India, aiming to improve its quality for making steel. They focused on coal with high ash content that is hard to clean. Currently, most of this coal isn't suitable for steel production and is used for power plants instead. Lab tests and pilot plant experiments were conducted on different coal samples from the area to find ways to make the coal better for steelmaking. The cleaned coal showed properties that make it suitable for steel production. This research suggests methods to enhance the quality of the coal for industrial use.
