The researchers aimed to increase exhaust gas temperature in diesel engines at idle to activate the catalyst for better emissions. They achieved this by adjusting intake and exhaust systems and operating fewer cylinders. The exhaust gas temperature at idle condition was raised to around 300℃ by using intake throttling and running on half cylinders.
