A new way to make compressed air energy storage more efficient was studied. By using a special thermal energy storage system, the wasted heat from compressing air can be saved and used later when generating electricity. This system can make the whole process more efficient and reduce the need for burning natural gas. The researchers designed a thermal energy storage unit using gravel and tested its performance under different conditions. The results showed that integrating this system can greatly improve the efficiency of compressed air energy storage technology.
