Massive sediment loads in Stillaguamish River threaten local ecosystem health
The researchers studied sediment levels in the lower Stillaguamish River in Washington from 2014 to 2015. They used data on water flow and turbidity to estimate sediment levels. They found that sediment loads varied greatly, from 121,000 tons during a big storm to negative 56 tons when tides pushed sediment upstream. Overall, about 1.4 million tons of sediment were carried by the river each year.
