Genes boosting rice spikelets fail to increase yield, challenging crop productivity.
The genes TAW1 and APO1 in rice increase the number of spikelets per panicle. In a field experiment, the near-isogenic lines with these genes had more spikelets but lower yield due to poor filling ability compared to a regular rice variety. TAW1 did not affect internode diameter and spikelet number, while APO1 decreased spikelet number and increased internode diameter. This shows that TAW1 and APO1 have different effects on yield-related traits in rice.
