Permian rocks likely source of oil and gas in Surat/Bowen Basin.
The Surat/Bowen Basin has oil and gas from Permian to Early Jurassic rocks. Recent studies show rich source rocks in Jurassic, Triassic, and Permian layers. The Walloon Coal Measures are not mature enough to make much oil. The Evergreen Formation and Moolayember Formation have potential for oil. Most hydrocarbons likely come from Permian rocks. Gas and oil are more likely in the north due to organic maturity. Oil has moved vertically on the eastern side, creating oilfields. Oil and gas have spread laterally on the western side, forming small fields.
