The goal of the research was to find the best method for turning gray images into black and white. The scientists compared five different techniques to see which one worked best for general images and MRI scans of the head. They used a measure called region non-uniformity to test the techniques. After testing, they found that Otsu Thresholding was the most effective method for binarizing images.
