Precision irrigation could boost crop yields and conserve water in water-scarce regions.
Precision irrigation methods are being studied to improve crop growth and save water. The researchers combined a water application model with a crop simulation model to see how precision irrigation impacts crop yield and soil water management. They tested different ways of applying water, including variable rate irrigation, and compared them to traditional methods. The study focused on onions in a humid area in eastern England. Results showed that using variable rate irrigation helps save water, reduces drainage, and boosts crop yield by controlling soil water better. Even in wet regions, precision irrigation can be beneficial for growing crops effectively.
