Transformative moments in group discussions lead to peace in divided societies
The article explores how group discussions can help bring peace in deeply divided societies. By studying discussions between ex-guerrillas and ex-paramilitaries in Colombia, Serbs and Bosnjaks in Srebrenica, and residents and police in Brazilian slums, the researchers found factors that can improve the quality of deliberation. They discovered ways to keep discussions productive and how extended deliberation can lead to positive outcomes. The findings suggest that promoting effective discussions in schools of divided societies can have long-lasting benefits.
