Lateral sediment transport key in river health, new study reveals.
Fine sediment accumulation in gravel-bed rivers affects habitats and sediment budgets. Two types of sediment traps were tested in the River Tame, UK. The traps with vertical and lateral exchange accumulated more fine sediment than traps with only vertical exchange. This shows that lateral transport plays a significant role in sediment accumulation. However, using different trap types can lead to challenges in data interpretation.
