Limited Potassium in Maharashtra Soils Threatens Crop Productivity and Food Security.
The researchers studied different types of soils in Maharashtra to see how well they hold onto potassium and release it for plants to use. They found that Vertisols are best at holding potassium, followed by Inceptisols and Entisols. Most of the soils had very low levels of available potassium, except for one type called Koregaon series of Vertisols. The lower layers of soil released more potassium than the top layers. This means that if these soils are used for intensive farming, crops may not get enough potassium. Overall, Vertisols had the highest potassium release, followed by Inceptisols and Entisols.
