New land systems classification in Laos reveals hidden agricultural landscapes.
Land cover data alone cannot fully represent different land uses in Laos. A new classification system was created to identify 17 distinct land systems, including smallholder agriculture and forests. Only 27% of Laos is dense forest, with the rest being a mix of agriculture and other land uses. This system helps policymakers understand the different types of land use in the country and their impacts on the environment and society.
