WTO's Regional Trade Deals Threaten Global Free Trade, Warn Experts
This paper examines how a special committee, called the CRTA, looked at trade agreements between different regions from 1996 to 2010. There was worry that too many of these agreements could harm the worldwide trading system. So, the CRTA was created to check if these deals followed the rules set by the World Trade Organization. Despite facing some challenges, the committee worked to make sure that each trade agreement reported to the WTO was checked properly. The study shows that these regional trade deals can boost trade among member nations but could also reduce trade with countries that are not part of the agreement. The main focus was on how these agreements were made based on specific international trade rules.
