Coastal barriers reduce hurricane sedimentation, protecting marshes from submergence.
Coastal foredune barriers can reduce sedimentation from hurricanes in marshes. The study compared sediment deposits in marshes with different barrier sizes. Results showed a 40% reduction in sediment volume and 505m less inland spread of deposits with a higher and wider barrier. This suggests that larger barriers can significantly decrease sedimentation in marshes. This has implications for understanding storm intensity and managing coastal areas at risk from rising sea levels.
