Unsustainable shark fisheries threaten livelihoods in eastern Indonesia.
Shark populations are declining due to targeted fishing for their fins. Indonesia has high shark landings, but data on its shark fisheries is lacking. A study in eastern Indonesia involved fishers in collecting data and found over 40 shark species are being targeted, many of which are declining and unsustainable. The study also looked at the effectiveness of shark-specific spatial closures for conservation.
