New plant species offers hope for cleaning up Cd and Zn pollution.
A new plant species called Sedum plumbizincicola can clean up soil contaminated with cadmium and zinc. It was found in China in 2005 and can absorb high levels of these metals. Scientists have been studying how to make this plant more effective at removing cadmium and zinc from the soil. They found that by managing how the plant is grown, planting it with other plants, and giving it the right nutrients, it can clean up polluted soil well. After many years of testing, it has been shown that using Sedum plumbizincicola is a good way to clean up slightly polluted soil without stopping normal farming.
