Decline in Freshwater Flow Leads to Shift in Fish Species in Iraq River.
The Shatt Al-Arab River in Iraq has seen changes in its fish population due to changes in water quality. Researchers studied the fish in the river from November 2015 to October 2016. They found 111 different fish species, with some being native, exotic, or marine. The most common species were Carassius auratus, Oreochromis aureus, and Planiliza klunzingeri. The number of species, the types of species, and the dominant species in the river have all changed compared to before. Water temperature and salinity were linked to the number of species found.
