Afforestation in China boosts species diversity and vegetation succession on eroded slopes.
Large-scale afforestation in the Chinese Loess Plateau region has significantly increased species diversity in both the soil seed bank and understory vegetation compared to spontaneous restoration of abandoned land. Afforested slopes have higher species richness and seed density of grass and shrub/subshrubs. This study shows that afforestation is more effective in promoting vegetation succession in areas with severe soil erosion.
