Changing climate patterns in Western Caucasus drastically alter snow cover duration.
The study looked at snow cover on the Lagonaky high plateau in the Western Caucasus from 1973 to 2015. They measured snow depth, density, and temperature at different altitudes. Snow cover lasted 70-80 days at lower altitudes, 130 days in the middle, and 215 days at high altitudes. The duration of snow cover has changed significantly in the last five years. Some winters had a lot of snow, while others had very little. The maximum snow depth recorded was 610 cm in March 1976. Recent changes in snow cover distribution may be linked to global climate change.
