They studied two different coastal areas, one with shingle barriers and the other with eroding cliffs. For the shingle area, they found that a large amount of shingle would be needed for defense. For the cliff area, they used a model to see how different beach nourishment options would work. The spread of the nourishment determines how much protection it provides.
